Organise a party together in Dutch

Practise planning a family celebration. The result you need is to divide tasks and budget fairly. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Independent practice. This original lesson is not official exam material. Use the responsible authority for current exam formats and official mock exams.

Read the situation like the listener

The group needs the guest count, available resources, named responsibilities and a maximum spending agreement. The immediate difficulty is that thirty guests are coming and the budget is limited. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: the venue is available free of charge. Turn a broad plan into owners and limits. Volunteer for a clear task before asking who will take food, drinks or other work.

Where: planning a family celebration.

Message: thirty guests are coming and the budget is limited.

Evidence or constraint: the venue is available free of charge.

Agreement to reach: divide tasks and budget fairly.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

  1. 01 Er komen ongeveer dertig gasten.
    About thirty guests are coming.
  2. 02 Daarom moeten we de taken goed verdelen.
That is why we need to divide the tasks carefully.
  3. 03 De locatie kunnen we gratis gebruiken.
We can use the venue free of charge.
  4. 04 Ik wil de uitnodigingen en muziek regelen.
I would like to organise the invitations and music.
  5. 05 Wie kan eten en drinken inkopen?
Who can buy the food and drinks?
  6. 06 Laten we vooraf een maximumbedrag per persoon afspreken.
Let us agree on a maximum amount per person in advance.

Put the six lines in the order that best helps this listener. Record one version with essential information only and a second with one extra reason and example.

Choose information that earns a response

For this social conversation, respond personally, give a short reason and offer an alternative, comparison or task division when useful. Avoid sounding unnecessarily formal or giving advice and decisions without recognising the other person's needs. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

A2

Short request

Er komen ongeveer dertig gasten. Daarom moeten we de taken goed verdelen. Ik wil de uitnodigingen en muziek regelen. Laten we vooraf een maximumbedrag per persoon afspreken.

Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.

B1

Connected explanation

Er komen ongeveer dertig gasten. Daarom moeten we de taken goed verdelen. De locatie kunnen we gratis gebruiken. Ik wil de uitnodigingen en muziek regelen. Wie kan eten en drinken inkopen? Laten we vooraf een maximumbedrag per persoon afspreken.

Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.

Ask what every model sentence does. Remove anything that adds no context, reason, detail, proposal or confirmation before making your own version.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

A2

Say why you are speaking, explain thirty guests are coming and the budget is limited and ask for the action contained in divide tasks and budget fairly.

B1

Connect the problem to “the venue is available free of charge”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.

B2

Compare two solutions through preference, time, relationship, budget and shared responsibility. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.

Four recording rounds

  1. Round 1: Remove background that does not affect the request.
  2. Round 2: Add one measurable detail such as a date, number or time.
  3. Round 3: Name two options and state which one you prefer.
  4. Round 4: End with a summary of no more than twelve words.

Change the facts and answer again

Change the number of guests, free resource and budget, then practise resolving a disagreement about food or music. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

  • Every sentence performs a clear function.
  • The concrete detail supports the main message.
  • My preference follows from the options I named.
  • The short conclusion does not change the request.
  • I included this required detail: the venue is available free of charge.
  • I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.

Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
