Call in sick at work in Dutch

Practise telling a manager you cannot work today. The result you need is to report the absence and protect urgent work. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Independent practice. This original lesson is not official exam material. Use the responsible authority for current exam formats and official mock exams.

Read the situation like the listener

A manager needs a clear absence notice, the affected shift, any urgent handover and the next contact moment. The immediate difficulty is that you have a fever and cannot do your shift. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: you will call again tomorrow afternoon. You do not need to give a detailed medical history. Say that you cannot work, mention essential handover information and agree when you will update the team.

Where: telling a manager you cannot work today.

Message: you have a fever and cannot do your shift.

Evidence or constraint: you will call again tomorrow afternoon.

Agreement to reach: report the absence and protect urgent work.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

  1. 01 Ik wil mij voor vandaag ziekmelden.
I would like to report sick for today.
  2. 02 Sinds vannacht heb ik koorts.
I have had a fever since last night.
  3. 03 Ik kan mijn dienst daarom niet doen.
That is why I cannot do my shift.
  4. 04 Mijn collega weet welke taken urgent zijn.
My colleague knows which tasks are urgent.
  5. 05 Morgenmiddag neem ik opnieuw contact op.
I will contact you again tomorrow afternoon.
  6. 06 Kunt u mijn ziekmelding registreren?
Could you register my sick leave?

Read each Dutch line once with its meaning visible. Then cover the English, keep the function and replace the time, person and requested action with your own details.

Choose information that earns a response

For this work conversation, combine a direct work message with a relevant reason and a proposal that remains workable for the other person. Avoid giving background without naming the affected shift, task, decision or follow-up date. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

A2

Short request

Ik wil mij voor vandaag ziekmelden. Sinds vannacht heb ik koorts. Mijn collega weet welke taken urgent zijn. Kunt u mijn ziekmelding registreren?

Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.

B1

Connected explanation

Ik wil mij voor vandaag ziekmelden. Sinds vannacht heb ik koorts. Ik kan mijn dienst daarom niet doen. Mijn collega weet welke taken urgent zijn. Morgenmiddag neem ik opnieuw contact op. Kunt u mijn ziekmelding registreren?

Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.

Compare the recording with the model by function, not by identical wording. First check whether purpose, concrete detail and next action are all audible.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

A2

Say why you are speaking, explain you have a fever and cannot do your shift and ask for the action contained in report the absence and protect urgent work.

B1

Connect the problem to “you will call again tomorrow afternoon”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.

B2

Compare two solutions through staffing, fairness, workload, development and reliability. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.

Four recording rounds

  1. Round 1: Give the complete message in no more than twenty seconds.
  2. Round 2: Repeat with a different day, place and reason.
  3. Round 3: Let the first solution fail and offer one practical alternative.
  4. Round 4: Listen once and replace exactly two vague words.

Change the facts and answer again

Change the shift, urgent task and update time; practise a short voicemail and a slightly fuller live phone call. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

  • The listener knows within two sentences why I am speaking.
  • My detail can be checked or acted on.
  • The proposed solution fits the problem.
  • My final sentence invites a useful response.
  • I included this required detail: you will call again tomorrow afternoon.
  • I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.

Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
