Practise calling customer service. The result you need is to end a contract and receive written confirmation. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.
Read the situation like the listener
The agent needs the customer number, requested end date, failed online attempt and confirmation preference. The immediate difficulty is that the online cancellation keeps showing an error. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: the contract ends at the end of the month. Say clearly that you want to cancel, not merely discuss the contract. Repeat the end date and ask for proof that no renewal will occur.
Where: calling customer service.
Message: the online cancellation keeps showing an error.
Evidence or constraint: the contract ends at the end of the month.
Agreement to reach: end a contract and receive written confirmation.
Six Dutch phrases and their meaning
- 01 Ik wil mijn abonnement opzeggen.
I would like to cancel my subscription. - 02 Online krijg ik steeds een foutmelding.
I keep receiving an error message online. - 03 Mijn klantnummer is 4826.
My customer number is 4826. - 04 Het contract loopt aan het einde van deze maand af.
The contract runs until the end of this month. - 05 Ik wil geen nieuw jaarcontract.
I do not want a new annual contract. - 06 Kunt u de einddatum schriftelijk bevestigen?
Could you confirm the end date in writing?
Sort the six lines into opening, explanation and closing. Record the opening first, then add the explanation and agreement in two separate rounds.
Choose information that earns a response
For this shops and services conversation, identify the product or service, describe the failure and ask for a realistic remedy. Avoid repeating that the situation is bad without a receipt, order number, defect, deadline or preferred solution. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.
Two Dutch answer models to adapt
Short request
Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.
Connected explanation
Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.
Mark the sentence carrying the most important fact. Build a new answer in which that fact changes while the communicative structure stays intact.
Make the task harder without changing its purpose
A2
Say why you are speaking, explain the online cancellation keeps showing an error and ask for the action contained in end a contract and receive written confirmation.
B1
Connect the problem to “the contract ends at the end of the month”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.
B2
Compare two solutions through price, time, safety, service quality and proof of purchase. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.
Four recording rounds
- Round 1: State the request before giving background.
- Round 2: Add one cause and one visible consequence.
- Round 3: Say the same message politely but firmly.
- Round 4: Finish without notes by confirming a date or action.
Change the facts and answer again
Change the service, customer number and notice period, then practise responding when the agent first offers a discount. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.
Check the outcome
- My opening names the subject without a long introduction.
- Cause and consequence belong together.
- Politeness does not make the request vague.
- The follow-up contains a usable time or action.
- I included this required detail: the contract ends at the end of the month.
- I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
