Municipality · English-guided Dutch speaking
Make a municipal appointment in Dutch
Practise calling a municipal service desk. The result you need is to obtain an appointment for a document. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.
Read the situation like the listener
The employee needs the document type, deadline, online problem, available days and question about alternatives. The immediate difficulty is that the online calendar has no available time. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: your identity document expires in three weeks. Explain why the timing matters without presenting it as an emergency. Offer two days and ask about another location only after the main request is clear.
Where: calling a municipal service desk.
Message: the online calendar has no available time.
Evidence or constraint: your identity document expires in three weeks.
Agreement to reach: obtain an appointment for a document.
Six Dutch phrases and their meaning
- 01 Ik wil graag een afspraak bij de gemeente maken.
I would like to make an appointment at the municipality. - 02 Mijn identiteitsdocument verloopt over drie weken.
My identity document expires in three weeks. - 03 Online zie ik geen beschikbare tijden.
I cannot see any available times online. - 04 Ik kan op maandag of donderdag.
I am available on Monday or Thursday. - 05 Welke documenten moet ik meenemen?
Which documents should I bring? - 06 Is er een andere locatie met een eerdere afspraak?
Is there another location with an earlier appointment?
Read each Dutch line once with its meaning visible. Then cover the English, keep the function and replace the time, person and requested action with your own details.
Choose information that earns a response
For this municipality conversation, make an administrative or community request concrete with a document, date, observed problem and next action. Avoid asking what to do before saying which document, login step, local issue or appointment you mean. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.
Two Dutch answer models to adapt
Short request
Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.
Connected explanation
Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.
Compare the recording with the model by function, not by identical wording. First check whether purpose, concrete detail and next action are all audible.
Make the task harder without changing its purpose
A2
Say why you are speaking, explain the online calendar has no available time and ask for the action contained in obtain an appointment for a document.
B1
Connect the problem to “your identity document expires in three weeks”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.
B2
Compare two solutions through rules, feasibility, privacy, access and public benefit. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.
Four recording rounds
- Round 1: Give the complete message in no more than twenty seconds.
- Round 2: Repeat with a different day, place and reason.
- Round 3: Let the first solution fail and offer one practical alternative.
- Round 4: Listen once and replace exactly two vague words.
Change the facts and answer again
Change the document, expiry date and available weekdays, then practise spelling your surname and confirming what to bring. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.
Check the outcome
- The listener knows within two sentences why I am speaking.
- My detail can be checked or acted on.
- The proposed solution fits the problem.
- My final sentence invites a useful response.
- I included this required detail: your identity document expires in three weeks.
- I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
