Propose a safer playground in Dutch

Practise speaking to a neighbourhood worker about the playground. The result you need is to agree to test one concrete safety measure. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Read the situation like the listener

The neighbourhood worker needs an observed risk, the busiest time, a testable measure and a date for reviewing the result. The immediate difficulty is that cyclists cross the entrance while children are playing. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: you propose a trial with clear markings and a low access fence. Describe what happens at the entrance before naming your solution. Ask for a limited trial so the measure can be assessed instead of demanding a permanent change immediately.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

1. 01 Ik wil graag de veiligheid van het speelplein bespreken.
   I would like to discuss the safety of the playground.
2. 02 Bij de ingang rijden fietsers tussen de kinderen door.
   At the entrance, cyclists pass between the children.
3. 03 Vooral na schooltijd levert dat gevaarlijke situaties op.
   This creates dangerous situations, especially after school.
4. 04 Kunnen we eerst duidelijke markeringen aanbrengen?
   Could we start by adding clear markings?
5. 05 Een laag hek kan fietsers naar de andere ingang leiden.
   A low fence could direct cyclists to the other entrance.
6. 06 Kunnen we deze oplossing een maand testen?
   Could we test this solution for one month?

Choose information that earns a response

For this municipality conversation, make an administrative or community request concrete with a document, date, observed problem and next action. Avoid asking what to do before saying which document, login step, local issue or appointment you mean. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

Compare the recording with the model by function, not by identical wording. First check whether purpose, concrete detail and next action are all audible.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

Four recording rounds

1. Round 1: Give the complete message in no more than twenty seconds.
2. Round 2: Repeat with a different day, place and reason.
3. Round 3: Let the first solution fail and offer one practical alternative.
4. Round 4: Listen once and replace exactly two vague words.

Change the facts and answer again

Change the busiest time, entrance and proposed measure, then respond when the worker asks how residents and parents can help evaluate the trial. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

• The listener knows within two sentences why I am speaking.
• My detail can be checked or acted on.
• The proposed solution fits the problem.
• My final sentence invites a useful response.
• I included this required detail: you propose a trial with clear markings and a low access fence.
• I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
