Make a proposal at a neighbourhood meeting in Dutch

Practise speaking during a local residents' meeting. The result you need is to gain support for a safer playground. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Read the situation like the listener

Residents need a concrete safety example, a feasible first measure and a way to help develop the proposal. The immediate difficulty is that bicycles often cross the play area. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: you propose markings and a low fence. Separate the observed problem from your preferred solution. Offer a smaller measure and a stronger measure so the group can discuss cost and effect.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

1. 01 Ik wil een probleem bij het speelplein bespreken.
   I would like to discuss a problem near the playground.
2. 02 Er rijden vaak fietsen tussen de spelende kinderen.
   Bicycles often pass between the children who are playing.
3. 03 Dat levert onveilige situaties op.
   That creates unsafe situations.
4. 04 Duidelijke markering kan al helpen.
   Clear markings could already help.
5. 05 Daarnaast stel ik een laag hek bij de ingang voor.
   I also propose a low fence near the entrance.
6. 06 Wie wil dit voorstel samen met mij uitwerken?
   Who would like to develop this proposal with me?

Put the six lines in the order that best helps this listener. Record one version with essential information only and a second with one extra reason and example.

Choose information that earns a response

For this municipality conversation, make an administrative or community request concrete with a document, date, observed problem and next action. Avoid asking what to do before saying which document, login step, local issue or appointment you mean. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

Ask what every model sentence does. Remove anything that adds no context, reason, detail, proposal or confirmation before making your own version.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

Four recording rounds

1. Round 1: Remove background that does not affect the request.
2. Round 2: Add one measurable detail such as a date, number or time.
3. Round 3: Name two options and state which one you prefer.
4. Round 4: End with a summary of no more than twelve words.

Change the facts and answer again

Replace the playground issue with waste, lighting or traffic and propose one quick change plus one longer-term option. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

• Every sentence performs a clear function.
• The concrete detail supports the main message.
• My preference follows from the options I named.
• The short conclusion does not change the request.
• I included this required detail: you propose markings and a low fence.
• I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
