Make an appointment with a technician in Dutch

Practise arranging access for a home repair. The result you need is to agree on a time that both sides can use. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Read the situation like the listener

A planner needs to know which proposal fails, which alternative works, the address and how precise the arrival time must be. The immediate difficulty is that the proposed morning does not work. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: Thursday between 1 and 4 p.m. is possible. Reject the first time briefly and move directly to a usable alternative. Give a time window rather than saying that you are free later.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

1. 01 Ik wil graag een reparatieafspraak maken.
   I would like to make a repair appointment.
2. 02 De voorgestelde ochtend kan ik niet.
   I cannot make the proposed morning.
3. 03 Donderdagmiddag ben ik wel thuis.
   I will be home on Thursday afternoon.
4. 04 Kan de monteur tussen één en vier uur komen?
   Can the technician come between one and four?
5. 05 Mijn huisnummer is 28.
   My house number is 28.
6. 06 Kunt u laten weten hoe laat hij ongeveer komt?
   Could you let me know approximately what time he will arrive?

Sort the six lines into opening, explanation and closing. Record the opening first, then add the explanation and agreement in two separate rounds.

Choose information that earns a response

For this housing conversation, name the concrete housing issue, its effect and the access or timing needed for a workable solution. Avoid describing frustration for a long time before the listener knows what is broken, when it began or what action you need. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

Mark the sentence carrying the most important fact. Build a new answer in which that fact changes while the communicative structure stays intact.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

Four recording rounds

1. Round 1: State the request before giving background.
2. Round 2: Add one cause and one visible consequence.
3. Round 3: Say the same message politely but firmly.
4. Round 4: Finish without notes by confirming a date or action.

Change the facts and answer again

Practise once with a plumber and once with an internet technician; change the day, address and acceptable time window. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

• My opening names the subject without a long introduction.
• Cause and consequence belong together.
• Politeness does not make the request vague.
• The follow-up contains a usable time or action.
• I included this required detail: Thursday between 1 and 4 p.m. is possible.
• I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
