Ask about medicine at a Dutch pharmacy

Practise asking a pharmacist for safe-use information. The result you need is to understand dosage, timing and combination risks. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Read the situation like the listener

A pharmacist needs the exact product, your uncertainty and other medication before answering safely. The immediate difficulty is that the patient leaflet is unclear. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: you also use an allergy medicine. Take the package with you and ask one question at a time. Repeat the dosage and timing back to the pharmacist instead of assuming that you understood.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

1. 01 Ik heb een vraag over dit medicijn.
   I have a question about this medicine.
2. 02 De uitleg in de bijsluiter is niet duidelijk.
   The explanation in the patient leaflet is not clear.
3. 03 Hoe vaak moet ik het innemen?
   How often should I take it?
4. 04 Moet dat voor of na het eten?
   Should I take it before or after eating?
5. 05 Ik gebruik ook medicijnen tegen allergie.
   I also use medicine for allergies.
6. 06 Kan ik deze middelen veilig combineren?
   Can I safely combine these medicines?

Choose two core lines and make three versions: for somebody you know, for a service employee and for a formal conversation. Change address form and directness, not the underlying goal.

Choose information that earns a response

For this health conversation, put symptom, duration, effect, safety detail and requested help in an order the healthcare listener can follow. Avoid trying to diagnose yourself or using difficult medical words while the basic location, duration or change remains unclear. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

Use the model as a route map with pauses after the message, evidence and proposal. Those pauses reveal which part disappears when you speak under pressure.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

Four recording rounds

1. Round 1: Record one informal and one formal opening.
2. Round 2: Explain one missing Dutch word with simpler Dutch.
3. Round 3: Add a clarification question from the listener and answer it.
4. Round 4: Repeat the strongest version with calmer pace and clear sentence endings.

Change the facts and answer again

Practise with a cream, tablets and a cough medicine, changing whether the question concerns food, driving or another medicine. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

• I can explain a missing word without switching languages.
• The answer remains logical after a follow-up question.
• Pace and pauses support the meaning.
• I included this required detail: you also use an allergy medicine.
• I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.
