Explain health symptoms in Dutch

Practise describing a complaint to a doctor. The result you need is to make the location, duration and change understandable. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Independent practice. This original lesson is not official exam material. Use the responsible authority for current exam formats and official mock exams.

Read the situation like the listener

A clinician needs chronology, location, triggers, relief and relevant treatment already tried. The immediate difficulty is that the pain becomes worse on stairs. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: the complaint began four days ago. Describe what you observe rather than diagnosing yourself. Use time markers and comparisons so the listener can distinguish constant pain from pain caused by movement.

Where: describing a complaint to a doctor.

Message: the pain becomes worse on stairs.

Evidence or constraint: the complaint began four days ago.

Agreement to reach: make the location, duration and change understandable.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

  1. 01 De pijn begon vier dagen geleden.
The pain started four days ago.
  2. 02 Ik voel de pijn vooral in mijn rechterknie.
I mainly feel the pain in my right knee.
  3. 03 Bij traplopen wordt het erger.
It gets worse when I climb stairs.
  4. 04 In rust is de pijn minder.
The pain is less severe when I rest.
  5. 05 Ik heb nog geen medicijnen gebruikt.
I have not used any medication yet.
  6. 06 Wat kan ik het beste doen?
What is the best thing for me to do?

Sort the six lines into opening, explanation and closing. Record the opening first, then add the explanation and agreement in two separate rounds.

Choose information that earns a response

For this health conversation, put symptom, duration, effect, safety detail and requested help in an order the healthcare listener can follow. Avoid trying to diagnose yourself or using difficult medical words while the basic location, duration or change remains unclear. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

A2

Short request

De pijn begon vier dagen geleden. Ik voel de pijn vooral in mijn rechterknie. In rust is de pijn minder. Wat kan ik het beste doen?

Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.

B1

Connected explanation

De pijn begon vier dagen geleden. Ik voel de pijn vooral in mijn rechterknie. Bij traplopen wordt het erger. In rust is de pijn minder. Ik heb nog geen medicijnen gebruikt. Wat kan ik het beste doen?

Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.

Mark the sentence carrying the most important fact. Build a new answer in which that fact changes while the communicative structure stays intact.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

A2

Say why you are speaking, explain the pain becomes worse on stairs and ask for the action contained in make the location, duration and change understandable.

B1

Connect the problem to “the complaint began four days ago”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.

B2

Compare two solutions through urgency, safety, availability and appropriate professional care. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.

Four recording rounds

  1. Round 1: State the request before giving background.
  2. Round 2: Add one cause and one visible consequence.
  3. Round 3: Say the same message politely but firmly.
  4. Round 4: Finish without notes by confirming a date or action.

Change the facts and answer again

Move the pain to a shoulder or ankle, change what makes it worse and add one activity that is still possible. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

  • My opening names the subject without a long introduction.
  • Cause and consequence belong together.
  • Politeness does not make the request vague.
  • The follow-up contains a usable time or action.
  • I included this required detail: the complaint began four days ago.
  • I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.

Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
