Make a GP appointment in Dutch

Practise calling a general practice. The result you need is to get an appropriate appointment soon. This lesson turns that one real-life task into Dutch phrases, two answer models and a recording routine.

Independent practice. This original lesson is not official exam material. Use the responsible authority for current exam formats and official mock exams.

Read the situation like the listener

The assistant needs the main symptom, duration, relevant urgency information and your availability; they may ask follow-up questions. The immediate difficulty is that you have coughed for a week and sleep badly. The useful fact that changes the conversation is this: you can attend at any time in the morning. Lead with the reason for calling and how long it has lasted. Answer safety questions directly and avoid inventing medical Dutch when a simple description is clearer.

Where: calling a general practice.

Message: you have coughed for a week and sleep badly.

Evidence or constraint: you can attend at any time in the morning.

Agreement to reach: get an appropriate appointment soon.

Six Dutch phrases and their meaning

  1. 01 Ik wil graag een afspraak met de huisarts.
I would like to make an appointment with the GP.
  2. 02 Ik hoest nu al een week.
I have been coughing for a week now.
  3. 03 Door het hoesten slaap ik slecht.
The coughing makes it difficult for me to sleep.
  4. 04 Ik heb geen hoge koorts.
I do not have a high fever.
  5. 05 In de ochtend kan ik altijd komen.
I can come at any time in the morning.
  6. 06 Is er morgen nog een plek vrij?
Is there still an appointment available tomorrow?

Read each Dutch line once with its meaning visible. Then cover the English, keep the function and replace the time, person and requested action with your own details.

Choose information that earns a response

For this health conversation, put symptom, duration, effect, safety detail and requested help in an order the healthcare listener can follow. Avoid trying to diagnose yourself or using difficult medical words while the basic location, duration or change remains unclear. If one Dutch word disappears, describe it more simply and continue; the listener still needs the problem, the decisive detail and a next action.

Two Dutch answer models to adapt

A2

Short request

Ik wil graag een afspraak met de huisarts. Ik hoest nu al een week. Ik heb geen hoge koorts. Is er morgen nog een plek vrij?

Change the person and one practical detail before recording. Keep the request audible.

B1

Connected explanation

Ik wil graag een afspraak met de huisarts. Ik hoest nu al een week. Door het hoesten slaap ik slecht. Ik heb geen hoge koorts. In de ochtend kan ik altijd komen. Is er morgen nog een plek vrij?

Use all six lines only when each one helps the other person decide or act.

Compare the recording with the model by function, not by identical wording. First check whether purpose, concrete detail and next action are all audible.

Make the task harder without changing its purpose

A2

Say why you are speaking, explain you have coughed for a week and sleep badly and ask for the action contained in get an appropriate appointment soon.

B1

Connect the problem to “you can attend at any time in the morning”. Add a realistic alternative if the first request cannot happen.

B2

Compare two solutions through urgency, safety, availability and appropriate professional care. Recognise one disadvantage and state the condition behind your choice.

Four recording rounds

  1. Round 1: Give the complete message in no more than twenty seconds.
  2. Round 2: Repeat with a different day, place and reason.
  3. Round 3: Let the first solution fail and offer one practical alternative.
  4. Round 4: Listen once and replace exactly two vague words.

Change the facts and answer again

Replace the cough with a rash or recurring headache, change the duration and practise answering one extra question about fever or medication. This second version tests whether you can transfer the message instead of reciting it. Add one plausible listener question and answer it without restarting.

Check the outcome

  • The listener knows within two sentences why I am speaking.
  • My detail can be checked or acted on.
  • The proposed solution fits the problem.
  • My final sentence invites a useful response.
  • I included this required detail: you can attend at any time in the morning.
  • I finished the message before correcting pronunciation.

Compare two recordings; do not turn this checklist into an official score or pass prediction. For an exam, practise the official interface, timing and instructions separately.
